What is Permanent Laser Hair Reduction

Laser hair reduction is a process of permanent hair reduction by means of exposure to short pulses of laser light to destroy the hair follicles.

It is one of the most commonly done procedures in skin clinics worldwide. It has become increasingly popular because of its speed and efficacy. The efficacy, to a great extent depends upon the operator and the machine used.

The laser light is selectively absorbed by the pigment or the melanin in the hair follicles. This heats up the cells in the follicles and permanently damages or destroys them. Hair grows in several phases (Anagen, Catagen and Telogen). It is only the growing follicles (Anagen) that absorb laser light. Hence a number of sessions are required to target hair in all phases of growth and destroy them or convert them into small, light vellus hair. On an average, 6-8 sessions are required for most individuals.

The number of sessions required vary according to the skin colour, colour of hair, thickness of hair, presence of hormonal imbalance (in women), etc. Some body parts need more sessions than the others, for e.g., bikini area in a female.

Facial hair growth in females needs special attention and laser hair reduction should be attempted only under supervision of a qualified and experienced dermatologist. Thick hair growth on face, areola and midriff in a female is usually a sign of hormonal stimulation. It is important to evaluate the hormonal status and treat the imbalance medically if required.

At the end of 6-8 sessions, the end result is very few, fine light hair that remain. Maintenance sessions may be required once or twice in a year depending on the body part.

What is Laser Hair Reduction?

Laser Hair Reduction is a permanent way to reduce unwanted hair on the face and body. It is suitable for both men and women, and more people are discovering the benefits of laser hair reduction every day. The laser light has an affinity to pigment in the hair. Absorption of the laser by the pigment laden hair follicle, destroys the hair follicle that is in the growing phase. Thus over a series of 6-8 sessions, one can see a permanent reduction in the hair follicles.

How is Laser Hair Reduction better compared to other hair removal treatments?

Traditional hair removal methods include shaving, waxing, plucking and depilatory creams. These are only temporary fixes that are often inconvenient, painful and irritating to the skin. Waxing is painful and can damage the surface of your skin. Depilatory creams can cause irritant reactions on the skin. Soprano laser is a safe, convenient, quick and permanent solution to effectively reduce unwanted hair.

What happens in a Laser Hair Reduction Treatment?

Laser Hair Reduction is a very safe procedure, that is customized according to your specific skin type and hair colour. Our laser therapists will shave the hair above the surface of the skin. The laser handpiece is then moved over the treatment area, emitting light-based energy in short pulses. The laser will heat the hair to a point that will affect its ability to regrow. Hair that is hidden beneath the skin at the time of treatment will shed over the next week or two.

Does Laser Hair Reduction hurt?

Laser Hair Reduction with Soprano is virtually painless and is a much more pleasant treatment experience than waxing, tweezing and electrolysis, which are much more aggressive and damaging to the skin. You may feel a slight warmth as the laser energy builds up in a particular area. Most people describe the sensation as “a warm stone massage.”

How many treatments do I need?

The number of treatments depends on your specific skin type and colour, the thickness and density of hair, hormonal status and the area treated. On an average, 6 to 10 treatments are needed to see an optimum result.

How long should I wait between sessions?

Typically, hair growth is seen in the immediate week or two after a laser session, but this growth usually sheds on its own. Hair growth is then seen after 3-4 weeks. After each treatment your hair will regrow thinner and softer and less in number. It is ideal to do the next session when this regrowth is seen. Hence average gaps between session should be about 4-6 weeks initially and may become longer in the later sessions.

Can all hair be treated?

Laser Hair Reduction is limited only by hair colour. It is the pigment in the hair that absorbs laser. Hence, treatment is most effective on hair that contains at least some pigment. Unfortunately, it does not work on grey and blonde hair due to lack of pigment.

Are there any after effects or risks I need to be aware of?

Laser Hair Reduction is very safe, if you are being treated by good quality technology and by a qualified therapist. After effects are minimal with only slight swelling and redness on sensitive skins, which usually fades in a few minutes depending on your skin type. However, it is still important to follow post and aftercare advice stringently.

What are the benefits of Laser Hair Reduction?

It is cost effective. You will no longer need to spend your money and time on regular expensive wax treatment depilatory creams or other methods of hair removal. Laser hair reduction can also improve ingrown hair and make the skin smoother. It is a very fast and effective way to permanently reduce unwanted hair.

after care

First 2 hours

Your skin may feel slightly warm after treatment. You can apply a cool pack for 10-15 minutes if required – this will help to soothe your skin. Your skin may also be a little sensitive and pink for the next 2 hours (in some cases, this may last up to 12 hours).

First 48 hours

Avoid taking hot baths. Lukewarm or cool water is better. Avoid using strongly scented lotions, soaps and exfoliating creams on the treated area. Be gentle and avoid excessive scrubbing. You can apply make up on the treated area after 24-48 hours. Exercise and sweating should be avoided for 24 hours.

Upto 7 days

Make sure you apply a sunscreen every day and avoid exposing the treated area to strong sunlight. Swimming can be resumed after 3-5 days. Avoid doing any other procedure on the treated area for a minimum of 7 days after the laser treatment.

Next 1-4 weeks

Hair that was deeper in the skin at the time of treatment will start to shed from the follicles. This may seem like stubble initially but the hair will shed over 1-2 weeks.

Next 1-6 months

Hair that were in the resting phase during your treatment, have not been treated and may become active now and appear as new growth. It is ideal to do the next session of laser within 1-2 weeks of growth appearing.
