ANTI AGEING

Skin changes are amongst the most visible signs of ageing. We begin to age the moment we are born and the effects of ageing are evident throughout our lives. Collagen and elastin form the connective tissue that gives the skin its firmness and elasticity.

Genetically controlled changes start affecting the collagen and elastin as we age. Due to this, the skin starts losing its elasticity and becomes drier. Underlying fat pads begin to disappear and hence the skin starts to sag and wrinkles start to appear.

Skin ageing is caused by ...

1. Intrinsic factors

These are factors that are not in our control. Our genes control the rate and way in which the natural ageing progresses. With time, all of us develop lines and wrinkles and the loss of youthful volume becomes evident. The skin starts to become thinner and drier.

2. Extrinsic factors

This is a set of factors that affect ageing and can be controlled or modified by us to some extent. Our environment and lifestyle choices can cause our skin to age faster. We can surely take some preventive measures to slow down the effects of these factors on the ageing process.

The biggest contributing extrinsic factor is sun exposure. Ultraviolet light from the sun damages the elastin fibres, thus, causing the skin to sag.

Ageing changes
A number of changes occur in the skin as we age.
  • The outer layer of the skin or the epidermis thins out. The number of layers of cells remains constant, however there is a gradual reduction in the thickness of the epidermis.
  • Though the number of melanocytes (pigment cells) reduces, the size of existing ones increases. Large pigment spots called lentigos or age spots may appear on sun exposed areas.
  • Elastosis is a process in which the changes in the connective tissue (mainly elastin) cause the skin to lose its elasticity. The skin appears leathery. This is commonly seen in people who remain outdoors for long hours, e.g., farmers.
  • The blood vessels of the skin also become fragile, leading to easy bruising.
  • Secretion from the oil glands reduces, leading to dryness. The skin appears dehydrated and loses lustre. This is seen more commonly in women.
  • The sweat glands also produce less sweat.
  • The subcutaneous fat pad thins out resulting in loss of the youthful volume.
  • Repair mechanisms of the skin slow down. Ageing skin heals much slower compared to younger skin. Wound healing may take up to 4 times longer.
  • Skin ageing also affects and shows visible changes on areas other than the face. For e.g., the ear lobes and the hands. Ear lobes lose their firmness and shape. The aperture becomes bigger and no longer bears the weight of the earrings. The hands also start losing the fullness, making the blood vessels and tendons become very visible.

BOTOX

Botox works by relaxing the small facial muscles, thus leading to smooth wrinkle free skin. In experienced hands, it is a very safe and quick procedure and is often called “The Lunch Hour Procedure.” Most commonly, Botox is used to smoothen the wrinkles that appear on the forehead, between the brows and around the eyes.
